Committing

TO INNOVATION

Medicine and the biosanitary industry are strategic sectors in Asturias, where a strong commitment is being made to the development of biotechnology, biocomputing and biomedicine, based on the promotion of infrastructures such as the Central University Hospital of Asturias (HUCA), the support for R&D projects at the University of Oviedo or the significant innovative activity generated by the Fernández-Vega Ophthalmological Institute.

Asturias is a European benchmark in innovation linked to active aging thanks to the selection of the European Commission as one of the Reference Sites of Europe in innovation in the field of active and healthy ageing.

Education

RELATED WITH THE SECTOR

30% of the over 21,000 students enrolled at the University of Oviedo study technical degrees (Biotechnology, Biology, Geology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Engineering of Mining and Energy Resources, Forestry and Natural Environment Engineering…), highlighting the following health-related qualifications:

Master’s Degree in Web Engineering
International Master’s Degree in Analytical and Bioanalytical Sciences
Master’s Degree in Biotechnology of the Environment and Health
Master’s Degree in Food Biotechnology
Master’s Degree in Chemistry and Sustainable Development
Master’s Degree in Biomedicine and Molecular Oncology
Master’s Degree in Emergency Nursing and Critical Care
Master’s Degree in Neuroscience Research

Regulated Vocational Training, with 18,000 students enrolled, more than 35% in technical degrees, complements the technical qualification of the Asturian workforce, combining theoretical training with internships in companies.

Innovation

AND TECHNOLOGY

Technology Centers, R+D+i Institutions and Clusters

The new HUCA forms a unique space for assistance, teaching and research, generating synergies with the surrounding infrastructures: FINBA, the Public Health Laboratory and the Health Sciences Business Incubator.

It is worth highlighting the Health Information Systems (EDESIS), the core of the project for the computerisation of health centres in the region. Its projects include the integrated healthcare information system, the population and resource identification system, departmental applications for pharmacy, laboratories and radiological digital imaging and electronic prescriptions.

In the more healthcare-oriented side, the development of devices and sensors for the remote monitoring of biological markers and their integration with the HIS systems of the centre and the remote control of environmental parameters are promoted.

The BioBank has more than 60,000 human biological samples available for assignment to research projects. It belongs to the National Network of Biobanks of the Carlos III Health Institute, part of the European network of biobanks BBMRI – Biobanking and Biomolecular Resources Research Infrastructure.

It is made up of three subunits: The Brain Bank (centralised at the HUCA hub), the DNA, Plasma and Cell Bank (centralised at the HUCA hub) and the Tumor Bank (comprising a network of Tumor Banks at the various hospitals of Asturias).

Promoted by the Institute for Economic Development of the Principality of Asturias (IDEPA) and managed by the CEEI, it is an innovative space that offers specific hosting and equipment adapted to the needs of “bio” companies.

Under the BIOCEEI ASTURIAS programme, IDEPA and CEEI promote the recruitment and development of business projects in the field of life sciences.

Once the initiatives have been detected, they are accompanied by an individualised advisory and training itinerary and, concurrently, they participate in a “biotech “project acceleration programme.

It is the body responsible for managing biomedical research of excellence in Asturias. An organisation promoted by the Government of the Principality of Asturias in conjunction with the University of Oviedo which enjoys the support of various companies that participate in it as patrons or benefactors. It was created with a view to promoting biomedical research, taking advantage of the synergies with the Central University Hospital of Asturias (HUCA), with the aim of taking advantage of the flow of knowledge from

Asturian health and promoting the joint work of research teams.

Promoted by the regional government, it develops three fundamental lines: generating a knowledge space on health information in Asturias; guaranteeing that this information reaches the largest possible number of social agents in the most intelligible way and finally, linking the health information of the indicators to the different community actions being carried out in Asturias. A project carried out in collaboration with the School of Public Health and Medicine of the University of Wisconsin which currently participates in the County Health Rankings model in the United States.

Promoted by the Fernández-Vega Ophthalmological Institute, the FIO develops translational research in the cornea and ocular surface, the genetics of ocular diseases and ocular neurobiology with top-level international professionals.

Centre designed to accommodate business initiatives in the field of R&D&i in Health Sciences, very close to the Central University Hospital of Asturias (HUCA). An initiative led by Oviedo City Council.

The training in Biomedicine and Health at the University of Oviedo is one of the most prestigious in Spain and it hosts multiple investigations related with biotechnology, especially within the IUBA (University Institute of Biotechnology), the IUOPA (University Institute of Oncology of the Principality of Asturias) and the INEUROPA (University Institute of Neurosciences of the Principality of Asturias).

The Biomedicine and Health Cluster brings together more than 70 groups that work on the frontier of current knowledge on five basic lines of research:

  • Genomics and proteomics related with cancer and aging
  • Brain development and degeneration
  • Biomedicine and drug development
  • Regenerative medicine, transplants and implants
  • Research into food production and food technology

The scientific-technical services for research are accessible to research centres and to the general public (companies and individuals). With regard to those areas

related with the field of health-biotechnology it is worth highlighting:

  • Biotechnological and Biomedical Trials Unit
  • Food Technology Unit
  • Vivarium and Preclinical Trials Unit
  • Environmental Testing Unit
